a peek inside the fishbowl

Last week’s tip was:
Prepare supper together, there’s a job for everyone.
I know I’ve written about this before, and it’s true. Establishing good eating habits happens at home when the kids are small. Kids watch their parents like hawks. They will learn our good habits, and zero in on our bad ones. This is why I don’t drink juice [...]

When I met Emma Waverman at BlogHer I was immediately struck by what a friendly and passionate person  she is, and when I read her blog the connection immediately solidified. I found myself reading, nodding my head, and uttering many OH YEAHs and I’VE BEEN THERE TOOs. Read on!

I am happy to dropping into the Fishbowl [...]

It was one of the windiest days on record, and dare I say, almost chilly, but the sand and water beckoned. We spent some enjoyable hours taking it all in and ended off our day with gelato from Truffle Treasures.

This one is about palm kernel oil, cooking with kids, finding time to cook, and a keeper recipe for ham and pineapple quesadillas.

Do you like avocados as much as I do? Come steal this guacamole recipe. It’s soooooo good.

The KMDM activity for this past week was:
Cook extra chicken, turkey or roast beef for dinner and use leftovers as sandwich fillings for lunch. Deli meats are highly processed and usually high in sodium.
I’ve been on High Sodium Alert lately, and I have to say, it is shocking to see how much sodium is packed [...]

Know More Do More Monday: hydration

Posted by: andrea In: - Know More Do More

The KMDM activity we drew last week was about the stuff we drink:
Stop the pop! And drink more water. Flavour it with lemon or a sprig of mint. Cola adds extra calories to our diets. Studies show that drinking large amounts of cola may contribute to obesity.
I was struck by the word “may” in this [...]

Last Thursday I realized that we didn’t draw an activity from the KMDM tip jar. So I drew one (late!):
Put meat, veggies and cheese on a kabob for school lunches. The best choices are foods from the four food groups.
That was easy enough. But I didn’t have a kebob (isn’t it spelled kebab?) so I just [...]

Know More Do More Mondays: dinners

Posted by: andrea In: - Know More Do More

Emma drew this past week’s tip:
Make tonight’s dinner fancy – drink milk out of wine glasses. Canadian families spend less time eating together at the table than ever before.
I fleetingly wondered if early wine glass usage is linked to early experiments with alcohol… and then quickly nixed the idea and forged ahead. ;)
Sadly (for the girls) [...]

This past week we said no to junk food. This wasn’t an “official” tip from the Know More Do More tip jar, I chose to do this on my own. And I am so glad we did! Ditching junk food for a week allowed us to take stock of what we’re eating and get an honest [...]
