Bloggy book swap!

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Swaps

I was lying in bed looking at one of several huge stacks of books in our bedroom, thinking about my, um, special relationship with books. Basically, I aquire them and cannot part with them. Ever. BUT, on that rare occasion I do give one or two away I like to know they are going to a good home. Like a puppy.

I suspect I am not alone.

All that being said, I was wondering if anyone was up for a book swap? Let’s give our books good homes!

I will get the ball rolling by offering up a book. Up for grabs is a very new-looking soft-cover copy of “Writing Motherhood,” by Lisa Garrigues. It’s a great read, especially for bloggers. It allows the reader to really tap into their creativity, provides great starting points, as well as a much-needed kick in the pants for those who aren’t jotting this mothering stuff down on a regular basis. You can read more about it here.

This part is important: If you want this book (and I will mail it to you for free), you have to (a) be the first to respond in the comments below and (b) offer a book of your own and be willing to mail it to the person who comments after you.

Get it? I am limiting this swap to North American residents only. It’s too expensive to ship stuff overseas.

If you are offering up a book of your own, please link to a description, or a review of it on Chapters or Amazon. That way we can all easily read about it and get some book recommendations! Suffice it to say it should be a book you enjoyed and are happy to share… for keeps!

We’ll figure out mailing addresses later.

I’m putting an end to this thread at noon on Wednesday July 21. The last person will mail their book to me.

Any questions? Just let me know.

Now, who’s first?

I’d like that book for my niece, who is a new mom.

In return, I’d be happy to part with Nobody Cares What You Had for Breakfast, which is aimed at bloggers who need new ideas.

I’ve already read the one that zoom is offering, but wanted to correct the title – it’s Lunch, rather than Breakfast. The Amazon review is here: http://www.amazon.com/One-Cares-What-You-Lunch/dp/032144972X

(I quite liked it, though I don’t think I’ve applied what I learned.)

I’m in, with Letters To A Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke (http://www.amazon.com/Letters-Young-Rainer-Maria-Rilke/dp/0393310396).

Even though it is off copyright and available free online on Google Books the little book (slight tear on cover but otherwise excellent shape) is still a gem to hold and read in intimate places.

And it’s not just about poetry, but also about creativity and life. I wish it was also about how to insert hyperlinks into message boxes. [ed: I fixed the link for you Mike…!]

That book sounds like it would be delicious to read. I will offer The Divine Husband by Francisco Goldman. The cover has a few bends but that’s ok. It is a period piece set in Central America, but with observations on humanity that transcend time. http://www.amazon.com/Divine-Husband-Novel-Francisco-Goldman/dp/0871139154#_
I love Goldman’s style of writing, many passages are beautifully written. His characters jump out of the page, love his The Long Night of White Chickens and has a keen eye for that old ‘fact is stranger than fiction’ in the non-fiction The Art of Political Murder.

I want the book Carla’s offering! But I’d have run downstairs and decide what book to give!!! I’ll save the postage as well, my friend and get it from you next week! Let’s see, what book. How about ‘Alligator’ by Lisa Moore. A good read and very descriptive of life in Newfoundland. Sorry though I am not web savvy enough to know how to put a link to it.

I’d love to take Jennifer up on her offer of Alligator by Lisa Moore!

In exchange I would like to offer a newly published novel called Life After Yes. It was written by blogger Aidan Donnelley Rowley at Ivy League Insecurities: http://www.ivyleagueinsecurities.com/

The fun part about reading this book is that you can follow other readers thoughts on this blog book club in chunks of chapters: http://mothereseblog.com/2010/06/01/life-after-yes-chapters-1-11/

I want Good to a Fault!! I offer up Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (author of Remains of the Day). It was short listed for the Booker Prize and is being made into a movie right now, for release next year I think.

I’ll take ‘Never Let Me Go’ that Lynn is offering and give ‘A Bed of Red Flowers’ by Nelofer Pazira. The author is a Carleton U graduate. It is a story of her life in Afghanistan. Can’t wait for my two new books!
