The Peep-tastic photo challenge

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Memes/blog awards etc|Photography

Easter will soon be upon us. I love Easter. Not for any religious reasons.  I love the candy. The colours. The imagery … bunnies and eggs and baby chicks. Oh my. It is All.So.Freakin’.Cute.

Easter is a very photogenic family holiday, and there is almost nothing as photogenic as those lovely little Peeps. Oh, you know, those dollops of yellow dye#2, corn syrup, gelatin and lord knows what else that barely look like the chicks they are supposed to ressemble? Yeah. Those. You have to admit, they make excellent photo fodder.

We eat one package of them exactly once a year. And this year, I’m going to set up a big Peeps photo shoot.

And I’m hoping you some of you will join me for a big peeps-related photosharing exTRAvaGANza. Marla? Lex? I’m looking right at you, but I also know that there are a lot of other supercreatives out there as well.

Anyway, here’s how it’ll work:

Buy Peeps. Pose them. Freeze them. Melt them. Pile them in your mouth. Take photos. Lots of photos. Be creative! Post the best photos on your blog. Make sure you let us know in the comments below. If you can, post them in your Flickr with the tag “fishbowlpeeps,” that way we can look at them all as a group.

That’s it! You have until April 7 to post your photos. (I know that Peeps have a best-before date. I’m not heartless you know. Eat them when you’re done!)

Good luck! I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I am SO in!!!

I’ve never eaten, or purchased, a peep in my life. They just entered my conciousness about three or four years ago and they fascinate me.

Easter is also a fascination… what with the League of Shadow Bunnies on the loose and recruiting.

So it might just be you and me Lex, but I’m okay with that. I do love those bunny pics of yours. I remember them from last year.
p.s. what do you mean you’ve never had a peep!?

Hi there,
I don’t mean to jump-in when I know nobody, but I would LOVE to take part in this!

I was at wal-mart last night when I stumbled across the peeps. I love peeps. They are one of those things that immediately bring me back to childhood.

I grabbed a pack and then noticed “no sugar added” peeps made with splenda. I bought those as well. I plan to have the ultimate peep taste test/show-down. Of course, there will be lots of photos along the way!

Never. Had. A. Peep.

Neither has Gerry.

I have to say, even the thought of putting one of those in my mouth makes me recoil. I think it’s the colour. And the texture. And the fact they look slightly like yellow poop. I can’t be alone in seeing that. Can I?

They look like great models and toys though!

There’s always been a limit on how much candy I can eat, so why eat a peep when you can have chocolate?!? Have you seen the dark chocolate bunnies this year? 70+% cocao?? Now that’s something that goes in my mouth!

Thanks Natalie! I thought Peeps were widely known, and everywhere… tho’ I proved myself wrong on that point yesterday. I went to the big Superstore and there were none to be found. Perhaps there is a worldwide Peeps shortage going on that we don’t know about?

Of course I’ll join it – I just need to buy some Peeps. Also – have you tried them a little bit stale? I like them best a little bit stale. It does something for the texture.

I have eaten stale Peeps out of desperation.

I may be giving away the end of my photoshoot, but I think at the end of this I’m going to make a big batch of Rice-Krispy Peep Squares.

Natalie: I’ve been to the Superstore and just recently at the Pharmasave. Neither store had Peeps in stock. It’s official. I’m on a mission.

Peep alert – there are peeps at the dollar stores here in TO. They are faded, pathetic looking versions, but peeps none the less. Perhaps they are poser-peeps from the burbs.

So I finally found my Peeps. I was at Carlingwood last night. They did not have them at the pharmacy. And then I remembered Lex’s comment and we checked the dollar store. Score! I bought five packages. And then we went to go to Loblaws. They were there too, and believe it or not they were cheaper there than at the dollar store. *sigh* I bought a couple more packages, including one of purple Peeps.

Much to my children’s dismay, the photo shoot probably won’t be happening until the weekend.
