This one is for the babybook

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Easy ways to make kids happy

Last week Emma slept over at a friend’s house for the first time. I didn’t expect Emma to cling to my leg or sob a teary goodbye. Emma and Sarah have been sleeping over at their grandparents (with and without us) ever since they were wee, so from that perspective I knew it was going to be okay.

The novelty of sleeping in a bed other than your own is even greater when it’s the home of one of your best school friends.

In fact, it can be said that this particular friend is one that Emma has known the longest. I met her mother at a pre-natal aquafit class. Our girls (heck, we didn’t even know they were girls at the time) were bumps in our tummies. We like to tell Emma she knew F. before they were even born.

F’s family lives a block away. She is a very sweet girl, so smart and polite. (I find it funny how polite kids can easily make big bonus points with me. It’s the Whitey-effect in full force!) F’s parents are responsible, kind, and caring people. I had no problems letting Emma spend the night.

She was also invited for dinner. I worried a little about this part. Emma can be a picky eater. I didn’t want her to feel bad, or pressure to eat something she might not like. But I needn’t have worried. They had spaghetti for dinner – (yay!) her favourite. They watched part of a movie (the original Dr. Doolittle) and slept in F’s bunk. They watched the rest of the move the next morning, had waffles for breakfast, and went tobogganing. I don’t think anyone could script a better sleepover.

Things like this make me realize how quickly time is slipping away. Where has my goldielocks gone?

Emma's curl

Next time I turn around she’ll be moving out of the house.

*sigh*

This song will bring a tear to any parent’s eyes. I have a version of Nanci Griffith singing it.

“TURN AROUND”

Where are you goin’ my little one, little one?
Where are you goin’ my baby my own?
Turn around and you’re two
Turn around and you’re four
Turn around and you’re a young girl
Going out of the door.

CHORUS

Turn around,
Turn around,
Turn around and you’re a young girl
Going out of the door.
(Turn around and you’re a young wife
With babes of you’re own.)
