My favourite way to spend Valentine’s Day in Ottawa …

Posted by andrea in: Ottawa| Recipes and Food

… is eating. Seriously. Valentine’s Day, for me, is not so much about romance. It’s really just another excuse to eat my favourite foods.

When the girls were small, Mark and I weren’t easily able to go out and celebrate Valentine’s Day. First of all, it was nearly impossible to find a sitter. Second, the dinners we wanted to be eating were often more expensive than we can afford. And who wants to cook dinner on Valentine’s? Not me. Not ever.

I know I’ve written about this before, but it bears repeating: order in. And I’m not talking about picking up a quarter chicken dinner at Swiss Chalet. Order in, but do it right. After all, it’s Valentine’s Day (and you deserve it!)

Attention parents-of-young-children-who-can’t-find-babysitters! Order a special freshly prepared dinner from a local caterer. And buy your own bottle of wine. You’ll get an amazing multi-course meal, eat it in the comfort of your own home, and save on sitters and cab fare!

Here’s how it works.

Step one: Check out the menus of a few different places beforehand and decide on your menu. Here are a few of my faves …

Epicuria Fine Food Store and Catering
Here’s their Valentine’s Day dinner menu. As an added bonus, KIDS EAT FREE when two Valentine’s meals are ordered. How awesome is that?

Thyme and Again Creative Catering and Take Home Food Shop
Here’s their menu. We’ve always had great success at Thyme and Again. Love their desserts. (There’s a Tahitian Vanilla Crème Bruleé on the menu this year!)

Red Apron
Here’s their menu (you’ll need to scroll). I haven’t ordered anything from Red Apron before, but I’ve heard good things. (Personally, I’d order the Breast of Chicken stuffed with Walnuts & Caramelized Apple. Be still my beating heart!)

Any others you’d suggest?

Step two: Call in your order.

Please note that each place has a different ordering deadline, and quantities are limited. You’d be smart to place your dinner orders ASAP. You won’t regret it!

Step three: pick up and reheat. All the dinners we’ve ordered in the past have come with simple instructions. All you need to do is heat and serve on pretty plates. And light some candles too. No muss, no fuss… just how I like it.

Afterwards you can loosen your belts and toddle over to the couch for some after dinner smooching, or TV, whatever floats your boat. (You can’t do THAT in a restaurant, now can you?)

Breaking bread with the one you love most… now that’s the way I like to spend Valentine’s Day!

My vote is for Essence Catering. As Catering Director, I may be biased, but you will not regret the experience. Local, delicious and second-to-none; what could be easier? As a bonus, you could win an additional private dinner prepared by Chef Jason Laurin for another night of fine dining!

Well, this doesn’t quite fall in the same category, but our go-to meal for any special occasion - birthday, anniversay and Valentine’s day - is Sukho Thai in Bells Corners. Never ever disappointed.

We pick up from Sukho Thai - I should clarify. Four small children do not lend themselves to a relaxing meal in a restaurant. Thai, a movie and a back scratch/rub. My idea of bliss.

What a great idea! Much better than our traditional Valentine’s day meal of uh… whatever we normally eat :/

Thyme and again. Hands down. Get the salmon pate and a loaf of art-is-bread(get there early, it goes fast!!) and you’re good to go. Yummers.

If an elaborate meal of fine foods is what you seek, I am rather fond of Epicuria. I have purchased their frozen entrees. I gift their cookies and other sweets to friends and family. I have met their owner, Chef Tracey Black. And, I have attended several events they catered. Their Valentine’s menu looks great.

I have also been impresed by Chef Jason Laurin and the more creative dishes Essence Catering puts together for several events. Their Valentine’s menu also looks good.

My sweetie and I were both single for many years before we met, and many of our friends are single now. So after a hugely romantic first V-day together (he arranged a fancy dinner and a hotel room with a jacuzzi months before), we decided that we STILL thought it was overrated and so most years we’ve hosted a little antivalentine’s dinner for our single friends.

The last two years, however, everyone ended up cancelling at the last minute, so we accidentally had a romantic evening instead. (I can’t help it if I’d been meaning to make him watch When Harry Met Sally and if we just happened to have fruit and fondue chocolate around!)

By the way, February 14th also marks the lunar new year.

For me, this means Chinese New Year.

Your take home dinner could include embelishments to add an Asian twist.

Maybe fortune cookies with a sweet message inside?

Besides, Valentine red is also lucky!

I love Tulips & Maple’s take-home valentine’s dinner for 2. The food is amazing and the little extra’s make the evening at home restaurant-style without the restaurant crowds!

We have been looking into and right now Epicuria is at the top of the list! Their menu appeals to us the most and the free kids meals is the added bonus. Can’t wait!
