Some CBC for dinner

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

If you could dine with any CBC personality (radio or TV) who would you choose?*

I’m having trouble narrowing it down and would love your two cents on the subject.

1. Mark Kelley – The nicest guy on the news. I will never forget his broadcast on 9/11. Calm, thoughtful, personable … he was the one behind the desk as the towers went down. He knows how to talk to people and spin a good yarn. Wouldn’t he make a great dinner guest? I wonder what stories he’d share.

2. Peter Mansbridge– I watch The National on most nights, timeshifting between 9 or 10 depending on how my evening is going. I trust Peter to give me the goods. And I bet he knows his salad fork from his dinner fork. I’d like to ask him what it was like being discovered at the airport in Churchill, Manitoba.

3. Jian Ghomeshi is host of Q, one of my favourite radio programs. I have a love for arts and culture, so no dinner would be complete without Jian. He’s informed, funny, insightful … and passionate about the country in which we live. He’s famous for his handling of Billy Bob Thornton, an interview that is cringeworthy yet nothing short of amazing. See the horror unfold here. It was a radio coup – worth a gander if you haven’t seen it (but I honestly can’t listen to it anymore because it is SO painful it hurts).

4. Rich Terfy – is the host of Radio 2 Drive, which has become my new favourite on Ottawa radio. He has a voice that can melt the polar icecaps and is entirely to blame for global warming.

5. Rex Murphy – Rex is smart. And funny. And he has a way of cutting to the heart of every issue he takes on. Have you ever read his column in the Globe and Mail? The man never wastes a word. And I bet he’s great dinner guest. What would Rex would bring as a hostess gift?

I told Mark about my list the other day and he immediately remarked upon its lack of women. I pointed out that I would have invited Wendy Mesley (she’s my hero, and I love her on Marketplace) but I doubt she’d want to be in the same room as Peter. There is also Anna Maria Tremonti, the host of The Current. She is hard-hitting and no-nonsense, but on second thought, the thought of making dinner conversation with her makes me kind of scared. What if I got some parsley stuck in my teeth or said something totally dim?

What do you think? Who would you like to have over for dinner?

* I would only agree to do break bread with these folks if it the dinner was NOT based in my home. Oh, I couldn’t bear the stress of roasting a bird for broadcast journalists. It would have take place a very good local restaurant. Do you think Rich likes Indian food?

My vote is for Jian. I think he’s an excellent interviewer and is so plugged into the cultural scene of this country. He’s an interesting person and would have really cool insights to share (and maybe some great gossip too!)
Jen
p.s. can I come too? ;)

Strombo, without a second thought, for the exact same reasons that Jennifer chose Jian. :)

Kady O’Malley works for CBC now – she’s got great insights into fed politics and is funny as heck to boot. Of course, she might liveblog your dinner party.

Other CBC women: Julie Van Dusen, Susan Bonner, Carol Off, Barbara Budd

Sook-Yin Lee of DNTO, for sure!

I’d also add Terry O’Reilly of the Age of Persuasion to the list. Love that show.

Oh my goodness, I’m just watching that Jian interview with Billy Bob and HOLY CRAP, what a nightmare. If you look closely you can see a message on Jian’s computer screen from the producer — “If this really goes sideways, I have new music standing by.” Hee hee.

I would choose Jian as well, he’s my radio boyfriend. I was a big fan of Moxy Fruvous so I was pretty excited when he got on CBC — a marriage of loves.

I also really like Sook-Yin Lee of DNTO, but I’m not sure I’d want to have dinner with her — I feel that I could never be as cool as her and she’d be bored and I’d feel all stressed out about impressing her and GAH.

I also have a soft spot for Brent Bambury of GO!

Rick Mercer, Strombo for sure!

Specifically women? I watch CBC every morning so maybe Anne-Marie Mediwake, or Heather Hiscox. Arlene from Dragon’s Den and Dianne Buckner.

Ron McLean, from HNIC. I saw him at a sports dinner and he has amazing stories! I would love to hear more about amateur sports.

I was wondering what I could BLOG about and I may take this (again) and run…But I won`t use CBC personalities! I would go to where my intersts lie now.

I was going to say Stuart McLean but I see someone beat me too it.
The rest scare the sh*t out of me. I know I would be dead air as they call it, after I say something totally uneducated and stupid.

Nora Young, just to listen to her voice.

Rex Murphy, cause that would be a total riot.

Anthony Germain and Alan Neal. Their little soft-shoe in the mornings used to be the highlight of my day until the CBC lost their minds and sent him to China.

I love Jian but I think I’d feel way too uncool around him.

I have to agree with Mark. So few women??? Hm..interesting. There are plenty of really good smart female reporters and personalities on the CBC.

Susan Ormiston (move over Peter…it’s time for a new bingo caller. Hello Susan!)

Chantal Hébert

Mark Kelly

Nora Young

Jian Gomeshi

Kathleen Petty

Bring on the food and the great conversation.

Wendy Mesley because she’s the hottest CBC personality (at least she was 10 years ago when I left Canada). What about Alan Neal??? Is he still on CBC Radio? I wonder what he’s up to?

I disagree about Rex Murphy… he’s all wasted words. My dream is to hide his Thesaurus and leave him speechless.

I’d go with Rich Terfry because I feel like I know him already, just from listening to him. Besides, I’ve got a lot of questions for him about the music they choose, like why it’s the same stuff over and over. If the ALBUM is so good, why not play OTHER songs from it? I betcha it’s not his choice. Maybe he’d reveal that off the record.

Jian would be awesome, but I’d get the jitters. Sigh.

Rex Murphy — are you kidding? You wouldn’t get a word in edgewise! He’d be interrupting you and imposing his viewpoint the whole evening. Besides, he’s definitely got a face for radio; could be scary in person.

Woman? Eleanor Wachtel, host of Writers and Company. What a voice! And she’s done great interviews with so many writers.

It’s fun to hear from other CBC listeners. Thanks!

Gian and Sook-Yin, for sure. But I do have that fear-factor of feeling way to uncool in their presence. I also agree with zchamu about Nora Young for the voice value.

Did you happen to catch Shania Twain host the Current today for Anna-Maria? Ouch!!! It was to painful to listen too!

I’m all music, all the time.

So I’d pick Strombo (god I loved his take on music when he was on Much and that meant something.)
Jian who used to rub me the wrong way but seems to have really found his niche.
Brent Bambury (former host of a late night alternative music show in the late 80s called Brave New Waves (such a crush).
And Stewart McLean…

All boys… again. Hmmm….

Now for a serious political discussion.
Mercer,
Tremonti,
and Barbara Budd from as it happens. But damn the research that would involve.

Hmm… No love for Kim Bruhuber? Shocking.

Since my only exposure to the CBC is HNIC, I have to go with some of their regular expert panellists, even though some aren’t strictly CBC employees…

Ron Maclean, Al Strachan, PJ Stock and, of course, Pierre Lebrun.

At first I thought I would be intimidated by Rex, but on thinking about it, he is a good listener and never condescending on Cross Country Check Up.
For women: Nora Young, Rita Celli, Kathleen Petti, Ashley Wright
For men: Brent Bambury, Bob MacDonald, Rex Murphy, Alan Neal.
And so many more…..
And really, you all like Sook-Yin? I gave up on DNTO after Nora Young left.
Great topic!!

Oooh…
Barbara Budd would be awesome. I’m pretty sure her and Mary Lou Findlay were drunk on the last show they did together. Plus she narrates “Mighty Ships” on the Discovery Channel. We PVR it and watch them over and over (7.5 year old boy in the house – it’s either MightyShips or MythBusters)

Ian H
Brent Bambury
Alan Neal
Matt Galloway and Jim Curran (from Here and Now)
Strombo (My grandma despises him)
Who’s the guy who used to have the afternoon show…Bill Richardson I think..

But sadly – not Jian. He drives me up the wall. And no Sook-Yin either.

I so love that this post has more than 30 comments!

Jian is number one on my list. I have a ridiculous celebrity crush on him. I could listen to Lawrence Wall read out of the phone book. I’ve always liked Alan Neal and Adrian Harewood. I’d definitely invite Kathleen Petty, to balance the gender thing, and Nora Young because of the inspiration I take from Spark. And Tod Maffin from Inside CBC is another hero of mine. I would invite Rick Mercer because his is the only TV show that consistently makes me laugh out loud, but I’m afraid he’d chew me up and spit me out.

Fun topic!!

Mark Kelley has been my media crush since I was a teenager in the 90s. He has five sons. FIVE! I sat next to Susan Ormiston on a flight from London last year and we chatted about him. She said that he truly is such a nice guy.

My other CBC crush has always been Ian Hanomansing. And I love Carole McNeil. She has such a warm, friendly style.

Eleanor Wachtel would be my first pick.

Stuart McLean? I don’t think so. I loathe the Vinyl Cafe and can’t understand the popularity of his faux-folksiness.

I too am a fan of Jian. I often wait to hear if he goes “oh, yeah” during the Friday closing credits.

Remember when you’re planning your menus that Jian is a vegetarian.
