When there’s a birthday to be celebrated there always a card to be made.
I usually give the girls a piece of white cardstock and fold it in half. Sometimes I write “Happy Birthday” on a piece of paper and the girls copy it. But otherwise the art (and the sentiment) is all of their own. I leave the room while they are busy creating.
Emma often draws pictures of girls wearing long dresses and holding flowers or balloons. Last time she also wrote a knock-knock joke. It’s always very thoughtful and sweet. Sarah usually does the same.
But today’s was different. I folded the paper for Sarah. She ran for scissors.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“I’m making a mosque,” she said.
“A mosque?”
“Yes, a mosque.”
Later I looked to see what she had made. Sure enough, she had cut out the rough shape of a mosque.
“What’s with the eraser marks over here,” I asked, pointing at the fellow on the right.
“I drew the eyes too big so I had to erase them and do them over.”
“Did you use your finger to do that?”
“Yes.”
“Next time you should use an eraser so the face isn’t smudged.”
“That’s okay. Some people are brownish.”
So here it is. A birthday mosque, drawn to commemorate the birthday of her friend Sarah C. As far as I know she does not attend a mosque.
