Cooking up some snacks

Posted by andrea in: Recipes and Food

Last night we made (what I refer to as) Bits n’Bites. I was out of one of the main ingredients: seasoning salt. As I rummaged through my cupboard I wondered if I could substitute something else. And then I realized I wasn’t even sure what seasoning salt actually is. Is it a composite of salt and MSG? I Googled for another recipe and came up dry.

Something is up, I grumbled to myself as I tried yet another combination of:

Bits and Bites
Bit n’ Bites
“Bits and bites” snack
“Bits n’ Bites” cheerios

How on earth could a recipe for this not exist? In a world where there are recipes readily available for Swiss Chalet dipping sauce, KFC secret spices and the Cadbury’s Caramilk secret is explained in full detail?

Soon enough I realized that ya’ll call it NUTS AND BOLTS. A-ha! And here is the recipe we ultimately used. It’s very kid-friendly. It’s easy to make. There’s lots of crunch, and compared to other recipes the spicy/oily factor is fairly low.

Feel free to modify the recipe as you see fit. We don’t add nuts. We used Shreddies, Cheerios (including the remainder of a box of Honey Nut Cheerios), pretzel sticks, and a couple handfuls of cheese-flavoured fish crackers.

I wish I had photos to show. Sarah was agog at the quantity. We filled up a roasting pan with the stuff. We’ll be munching for weeks to come.
