Reno post #50 - a heads up regarding the future of Fishbowlreno posts

I have a handful of posts left to write about on the renovation front, mostly because (a) there are a whole bunch of things that I know would make good blogging fodder and (b) I like to give credit where credit is due.

This is a short version of what’s on our to-do list:

  • We’re still waiting for the installation of a couple major mirrors: (1) a biggie in the family bathroom and (2) in the mudroom bathroom. It is challenging to get ready in the morning I tell ya. For all I know I could be walking around with toothpaste dribbles down my shirt all day. Every day.
  • Also under the Still To Come column: our breakfast bar. I can’t wait to tell you more about it because frankly, it’s going to be incredible. 106 inches of PURE AWESOME. (Here’s a hint in regards to where it is being sourced. Woot!)
  • Also: I have some outstanding bits to shop around for, namely a few area rugs because HELLO, HARDWOOD FLOORS ECHO echo… echo…
  • Also: there are still boxes that need to be unpacked and bits of paint that needs to be touched up.
  • We still have a lot of art and photos to hang.
  • Let’s not even talk about the basement.

So here’s where I’m going with the remainder of this series (which HAS been a doozy, hasn’t it?). I’m going to do a room-by room breakdown now that we’re almost at the finish line, and talk about what materials we used and our motivation for making the decisions we did. Sound like a plan?

And when EVERYTHING is said and done I’m going to celebrate with a big open house… a giant real life show n’ tell! Who wants to come? :)

This is totally and completely nosy, but I would love to know some of the costs involved in your reno. I’m looking at doing something like this (although it involves ripping the ugly, nasty kitchen off our old farmhouse) too, and I really have NO idea how much it’s going to cost. Do I save $5,000, $50,000, or $500,000? If you’re willing, and I completely understand if you’re not, I would love some general ideas of how much each room costs or costs per square foot.

I’m trying to get brave enough to move beyond painting and changing furniture in our big old farmhouse and since you are nearly local to me that means your prices and sources are very valuable. Thank you for sharing.

Great! I’ll post an evite as soon as we are more or less done around here. :)

To answer your question Sarah, I’m not exactly comfortable sharing numbers in this particular forum, but I will say that we had the same questions you did when we started out… How far with $xxx, xxx take us exactly? The best thing to do is start by interviewing some professionals and comparing notes. We hired an architect and went from there. I hope that helps a little!

Andrea - I totally understand not sharing numbers (and I didn’t really expect you too). It’s great to know the first steps you took. Can I ask how far in advance you interviewed people? How far ahead of your start date did you hire the architect? Thanks for the advice.

Sarah - in terms of timelines we interviewed and hired our architect in Spring 2011. We worked on the designs together and he helped us find the construction manager/contractor fellow we ended up hiring. We moved out at the end of May 2012, and moved back in end of October 2012.

Makes me tired just thinking about it. :)

It does sound exhausting. We’re looking at starting our project in about five years, and I’m exhausted just daydreaming about it! Thanks for your information.

The Obligatory Blurb

Thank you for visiting! My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (14) and Sarah (12). I've been blogging since 1999, which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran of the Canadian blog scene, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I am the Managing Editor of Capital Parent Newspaper but also make my living doing a bunch of other fun things. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for parents and kids. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here.
