Cheep, er, CHEAP fun in Ottawa

Posted by andrea tomkins in: - Ottawa for kids| Easy ways to make kids happy| Multimedia experiments

CBC radio aired a sweet little piece in which I revealed one of my family’s favourite activities here in Ottawa. Can you guess what it is? :)

Jack Pine Trail

Sadly, I can’t get it to play. :( But I recognize the place and the activity! It looks like the Jack Pine Trail (or the Lime Kiln trail) in the Greenbelt. It’s one of our favourite activities for fall, winter and spring. We find that the chickadees are picky little eaters, and after our first foray when they knocked all of the seeds except the sunflower seeds out of our hands, we learned to go to Bulk Barn and buy a couple of dollars worth of black oil sunflower seeds.

Here’s our last trip: http://www.itsjustapie.blogspot.com/2012/02/thank-you-come-again.html

Chantal: I’m so sorry! This one is too good not to share!

Allison: I tried the link and it worked for me. It just took a minute to load. And your’e right, it’s Jack Pine Trail! Amazingly, these guys ate peanuts too. They must be hungry!

I tried the link again, and waited, but no joy. Perhaps it’s the firewall at work. How cool that the chickadees ate peanuts! I imagine that a peanut would provide a lot of fuel for those little guys. It always surprises me how light they are — if it weren’t for the slight pricking of their feet on your hand, you wouldn’t feel them at all, they are practically weightless.

The Obligatory Blurb

Thank you for visiting! My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (14) and Sarah (12). I've been blogging since 1999, which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran of the Canadian blog scene, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I am the Managing Editor of Capital Parent Newspaper but also make my living doing a bunch of other fun things. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for parents and kids. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
