Stewing over dinner

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Recipes and Food

Ah stew.

There are few foods that are as comforting as a hearty beef stew. I like mine hot and chunky, with a thick flavourful broth. I like veggies too, but not too many. It is, after all, about the beef. The meat is the star of this show:

If the meat is the star than the green onions get Best Supporting Actor. (After all, they’re theĀ ones I grew!)

This beef stew recipe is a slightly modified version of one I found on the Food Network website. I didn’t use any sweet potato because I didn’t have one on hand and omitted the peas because it would have resulted in a revolt here at Casa Fishbowl. Regardless, it came out pretty close to perfect, even without them. And the kids ate it too! Amazing.

I had a rare burst of energy and made it the day before so it had extra time in the fridge to settle and become even more delicious. Next time I’ll make it with the biscuits too.

Do you have a link to a favourite stew recipe? Please share it! I might be persuaded to experiment. :)

Nigella Lawson’s beef stew with anchovies and thyme is the best stew I’ve ever eaten, even though I really dislike anchovies as a rule. I usually substitute Thai fish sauce for the anchovies, which is much easier. So very delicious the next day!

I play around a lot when making stew depending on what ingredients I have on hand. It has to have rutabaga though. I love the earthy sweetness it adds. I also love having tomatoes in it too. I made a batch last week and posted about it yesterday. Enjoy.

we just make our stew recipe up, and use the crockpot so you can add stuff and just leave it. We throw in a handful of barley for some extra oomph

Hubby dislikes stew with a passion. When I was eating meat I made the stew recipe from The Looneyspoons, which calls for beer. It was hearty and delish.

I love stew but my husband does not like it. I had a recipe once and I wish I could find it. It had Herbs de Provence in it and it was amazing!

I am the opposite! My husband loves stew, but he loves it the way his mom used to make it – and I have tried to recreated that to no success :(
Your recipe looks yummy – I will have to give it a try! Thanks for posting this!

This beef and beer stew recipe is my favourite. I’m linking to where it appears on someone’s blog, but I found it in a really good slowcooker cookbook called Best Family Slow Cooker Recipes that I got for Christmas one year and use all the time.
