Karma chameleon

Posted by andrea in: Misc. life| Publishing/writing/career stuff

I had an interview yesterday with the editor and the publisher of a new magazine that’s going to be starting up in Ottawa.

I was ready for it. Not only was I wearing a cool outfit (along with 24 layers of anti-perspirant … applied at two different times that morning), my kitty face shoes, but I felt confident, in control, and even happy.

Clearly, this was going to be a snap.

The meeting was at Bridgehead in the Glebe. I was a little bit early, and I was pleased to snag a parking spot right out front. There were 15 minutes left on my meter. I noticed that the car next to mine was blinking zeros. Just then, the meter maid pulled up.

I managed to distract him while I sneaked my extra quarter in the expired meter, thereby buying this person an extra six minutes of coffee-drinking time. I was so pleased with myself.

“This is my random act of kindness of the day, tra-la-la,” I thought as I skipped into the coffee shop. Now, I didn’t expect good things to happen RIGHT AWAY. It’d be nice, but that’s not the way karma works. You have to accumulate good karma. THEN good things will happen. Even still, you’re not even supposed to expect these good things. It would be wrong to expect anything. Rude even. But still, I chalked one up for me.

The interview went well. The three of us chatted and laughed, and chatted some more. And more. I enjoyed my latte and walked away feeling pretty good about the whole thing.

It was then that I saw the ticket on my windshield. Twenty-five smackers for parking at an expired meter.

Was my meter expired? Yes. Did I deserve it? No, because I’m such a nice person. You think I should fight this one? :)

The Obligatory Blurb

Thank you for visiting! My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (14) and Sarah (12). I've been blogging since 1999, which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran of the Canadian blog scene, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I am the Managing Editor of Capital Parent Newspaper but also make my living doing a bunch of other fun things. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for parents and kids. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
