Our back to school craft: easy DIY pinback badges

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Easy ways to make kids happy|File under crafty

It’s been awhile since I’ve participated in something crafty with the girls, but Sarah and I had an idea about something we could make to celebrate – and decorate – her first day of school: fashion buttons.

Once upon a time I bought a bag of very old pinback badges from ValVill, buttons that included some chestnuts like these ones (don’t worry, these two weren’t sacrificed for our craft):

Classic.

Heh. They’re pretty good eh?

Our craft is a very simple one. Cover the badge (some people call this a pinback button, but really, these are too large to be just buttons) with a thin layer of glue and stick something cool on it: pretty paper, buttons, fabric, words or pictures from magazines or newspapers, whatever! All you need is glue and a glue gun.

This was the scene on the kitchen floor:

Trace the shape of your pin on pretty paper, cut it out, and glue it on. Don’t forget to brush a thin layer of glue on top of the paper and press down the edges too:

Keeping it simple with pretty origami paper

Or maybe you don’t want a paper background. Buttons are pretty too. This dollar-store button was simply hot-glued to a 1″ pinback button:

And here are our finished pins!

I’ll be uploading our annual first day of school pics sometime tomorrow. Come back and see how Sarah decided to decorate her school bag with these. :)
