Strolling

Posted by andrea tomkins in: - Westboro| Easy ways to make kids happy

We are big on the after dinner stroll here at Casa Fishbowl. You never know who you’re going to meet, or what neat little things you’re going encounter. It’s an adventure EVERY TIME.

The other night we found ourselves walking down to towards Westboro Village. Destination: the Secret Garden a.k.a Maplelawn, a walled-in public garden next to Keg Manor on Richmond Road. Have you ever been?

Some of us like to walk on the wall that runs next to the sidewalk:

Piper walks on walls

We paused to admire a nest along the way:

Birdy home

… and wondered aloud if its location was planned or accidental:

Location, location, location

“FOR SALE: Comfortable nest, overlooking scenic historic garden. No cats. Close to water and food source in trendy neighborhood of Westboro.”

There are a lot of these growing in the garden right now:

pretty blue

And lots of other green bits poking out here and there, but it’s still rather sleepy-looking (although I’m sure it’s VERY BUSY underneath the surface of the soil):

pathway

It doesn’t sound sleepy. Not like it does during the winter. It’s a pretty raucous place at the moment. It’s full of folks who feel like they constantly have something to say:

Epaulettes

Whereas others might find it a tad boring:

THIS IS SOOOOOO BORING

I don’t think it’s boring at all. On the contrary, it’s a pretty place for a wander, no matter what time of year it is.

Here’s what it will look like in May.

We have a lovely area to walk to from our little neighbourhood here too, right by lake Ontario, with so much to see. I take pictures of things too like you do whenever we go. But for some reason this year the weather had been so ick here in Toronto, we haven’t felt like venturing out much. So much rain and cloud cover…and cool. I wonder if spring will bypass us this year and we’ll go from wearing a fleece jacket one day to turning on the A/C the next day.

My wedding photos were taken in the Maplelawn garden, in August (6 and a half years ago).

So lovely. And it’s good to see that Jayne isn’t the only dog who likes to walk along that wall ;)

The Obligatory Blurb

Thank you for visiting! My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (14) and Sarah (12). I've been blogging since 1999, which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran of the Canadian blog scene, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I am the Managing Editor of Capital Parent Newspaper but also make my living doing a bunch of other fun things. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for parents and kids. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
