Holy snow

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Easy ways to make kids happy|Ottawa

We went for a turn on the skis again on Sunday. This time it was trail 26.

Sunday March 6, 2011

When you were a kid did you recite this little rhyme (it uses your hands):

Here is the church,
Here is the steeple,
Open the doors,
and there’s all the people.

I wonder where it comes from.

I stand by my earlier metaphor of cross-county skiing as a near church-like experience. The trees are the church and the steeple, and we are the teeny tiny people. It is humbling, and healing, to revere in such beauty and stillness. Maybe skiing on Sundays will become a regular thing?

Saturday was really crazy with all that rain too! It felt like I was driving in the Ottawa River!

Wow, too funny! Just last week I reminded my girls of this cute little rhyme. They are the same age as your girls and I used to “perform” it for them when they were small. I don’t know where it comes from but my Mum did it for me when I was little.
Your photo is beautiful and I can imagine all the people gliding quietly along the trail.

My mom used to do a second half to that rhyme.

Listen to them sing and pray
Open the doors and they all run away!

A great ski can be a transporting experience. It’s no coincidence that getting back on skis coincided with starting to write poetry for Six Word Fridays (and I’m not a poet).

It also coincided with one of your earlier posts on the subject (for which I thank you).

Hi, I think this is such a beautiful photo; just one memory of your quiet, peaceful ski adventure. Love the thoughts on the reno too… keep us posted on all your adventures :)

[…] Yesterday we decided to return to Trail #26 within the Stony Swamp network. Last time we’d been there was in the winter for a jaunt on our skis. […]
