Awhile back I had a conversation with a young woman about her habit of downloading music without paying for it. She really didn’t think it was a big deal, after all, record companies make ZILLIONS of dollars right?
Hmm. Okaaaay. Maybe they’re the richest folks on the planet, but what about the writer of the song? [...]

Facing the music

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff| sanity saving parent tips

I have a post up at the MediaSmarts blog writing about kids and music this week. Sex, coarse language, gender stereotyping - it’s a fast-changing world we live in and I’d love to get your thoughts on this topic. I offered a few of my own tips but I’m sure you Fishies have a few of your own to add.

We’ve booked our youngest daughter’s birthday party at Funhaven again this year and have been busy handing out the party invitations. They’re so neat (her idea, not mine!) and I wanted to share it with you:

It’s crazy easy to pull this together:
1) Write or print the details of the party on a small piece of [...]

A couple days ago Toronto-based blogger/writer/traveller Heather Greenwood Davis posted a link to a thought-provoking New York Times article that immediately sunk into my brain and has been percolating there ever since. It brings to mind something I often think about… and that’s my job as a parent and the Big Question that comes along [...]

The Obligatory Blurb

Thank you for visiting! My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (14) and Sarah (12). I've been blogging since 1999, which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran of the Canadian blog scene, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I am the Managing Editor of Capital Parent Newspaper but also make my living doing a bunch of other fun things. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for parents and kids. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here.
